Born in Barrhead, 1869, died in Johnstone, Scotland 1950; journalist, cooperator, socialist; early member of the Independent Labour Party; active in local government; Member of Parliament for the Labour Party in 1922 and 1923; wrote several publications on Scottish cooperative societies; (associate) editor of the Scottish Co-operator from 1918 until 1924; director of the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society from 1927 until 1939.
